An independent journalist association on Saturday issued a statement concerning the latest incidents. NUNS (the Independent Journalists' Association of Serbia) addressed the public and state authorities in the wake of the attack on a B92 TV cameraman last Thursday during a pro-Karadzic rally in Belgrade. NUNS: State responsible for reporters’ safety “Journalists, cameramen and photo reporters in Serbia are lately being exposed to brutal street violence. The reporters covering the protests risk their lives, being exposed to hooligan bullying and outbursts in presence of the police officers and security service representatives,” the statement reads. NUNS adds that the government, “especially the Ministry of Interior”, should be held responsible “for tolerating such primitive and barbarian behavior of protesters, guided by the representatives of the SRS and Obraz”. “The leaders of the demonstrations openly address death threats to journalists and high state representatives, which cannot be tolerated. This should be regarded as a serious criminal act, while police and judicial authorities have done almost nothing.” “The fact that representatives of certain political parties openly support this violent behavior is also outrageous and no one publicly speaks against it,” the statement continued. Editors of the leading media gathered in the association demanded that the state organs do everything in their power in order to secure safe working conditions for the media and journalists, and the protection of their lives. “We demand that authorized institutions treat every assault on the journalists as the assault on official person and that executive and judicial authorities, especially police officers, should resolutely protect journalist profession.” NUNS continued in its statement that assailants on B92, FoNet, RTS and other media Staff should be urgently identified, arrested and punished in accordance with the current legal criminal act. “If it happens that in the next 48 hours the perpetrators are not brought to justice, we will be forced to reduce our coverage of the public gatherings, for a start, we will not record any footage from these events”, the statement, that came after a meeting yesterday attended by editors-in-chief of the major media outlets.
