Press: Hague fugitive's arrest
12 June 2008 | 14:38 | Source: B92, Beta
BELGRADE -- The newspapers today lead with the big news out of Serbia Wednesday – the arrest of a Bosnian Serb war crimes suspect.

ALO—"Župljanin tired to persuaded police he was Vukadin", says that former Bosnian Serb official Stojan Župljanin, wanted by the Hague Tribunal on war crimes charges, denied his identity as he was arrested near Belgrade yesterday.

"Koštunica somewhat nervous", a high ranking SPS official, Milutin Mrkonjić, is interviewed.

BLIC—"Župljanin hid with two false names", this daily says.

"Army or police to Socialists", a headline says, meaning that the Democrats (DS) are willing to let the SPS have these portfolios in the next government.

BORBA—"Government next week?", says that the SPS has decided who to join in a cabinet.

"Stojan Župljanin arrested", is also on the front page.

VEČERNJE NOVOSTI—"Dačić with Tadić", says that the Socialists have decided to go with the DS-led coalition.

"Stojan Župljanin arrested", brings more from the raid in Pančevo Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the second Serbian company seems to have managed to enter the Slovenian market, with Delta Holding clinching a mall deal there: "Delta conquers Europe", this paper puts it.

GAZETA—"This is where Župljanin hid", this tabloid says as it brings a report from the location.

"Radicals: Ivica, Kučuk Aga!", the SRS slammed the SPS in the first parliament session, mentioning despised figures from the Turkish invasion era.

GLAS JAVNOSTI—"Župljanin falls over government, too?", the paper seeks to establish a link between the arrest yesterday and the cabinet talks.

"Kosachov for SRS-DSS-SPS government", says that Duma's Foreign Policy Committee chairman has made his preference known.

DANAS—"Arrested Župljanin denies identity", the daily informs in this headline.

"New government on horizon", is a report from the first parliament session, and the likely outcome of the cabinet wrangling.

"Tijanić: Sacking only unlawfully", looks at rumors about possible changes at the state broadcaster, RTS.

KURIR—"Župljanin arrested", the tabloid informs, and then brings a reaction from SPS official Milutin Mrkonjić.

The reaction is of a kind that includes repeated rather explicit language and offensive recommendations as to what Europe "should do now".

POLITIKA—"Župljanin arrested in Pančevo", is on the front page, which also brings an articled entitled, "Hague cooperation not in way of cabinet negotiations".

"Last applause for king of Gypsy music", is about the Niš funeral yesterday of Šaban Bajramović.

PRESS—This tabloid claims what no other media did: "Župljanin hid with sniper!".

"Delta builds EUR 240mn mall in Ljubljana", more about tycoon Miroslav Mišković's latest business venture.

Suspension and Bridges, January 31, 2010
Chris Farmer

What we need in Belgrade, really, is a suspension bridge. We need a bridge that will suspend our doubts about ever having enough viable bridges. We need a bridge that will suspend our disbelief about the dangers ...
