Five years since Đinđić assassination

Today is the fifth anniversary of the assassination of Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic. He was shot with two sniper bullets outside the Serbian government headquarters on March 12, 2003. Five years since Djindjic assassination Djindjic, the leader of the Democrats (DS), was the first prime minister after the fall of the Milosevic regime in October 2000. His coalition government, gathering more than a dozen parties, was appointed on Jan. 25, 2001. Beta news agency recalls that in the first news release after the premier's murder, the government, which declared a state of emergency, marked members of the so-called Zemun Clan as the organizers and perpetrators of the assassination. Former commander of the State Security, DB, disbanded Special Operations Unit, JSO, Milorad Ulemek, a.k.a. Legija, and gang heads Dusan Spasojevic and Mile Lukovic, were marked as the leaders of the conspiracy. Last year, Ulemek and Zvezdan Jovanovic, the latter accused of firing the bullets that killed Djindjic, were found guilty and sentenced to 40 years in prison each. Spasojevic and Lukovic were killed in a showdown with police several days after the assassination. Djindjic was buried in the Lane of the Great of Belgrade's main cemetery on March 15, in the presence of over 70 foreign state delegations.
