Slobodan Ribnikar, one of the founders of the first Serbian nuclear power station, Vinca, has died aged 79. Ribnikar was born in Belgrade on May 24, 1929, the son of daily Politika owner Vladislav Ribnikar, and was named after the doctor, Slobodan Ribnikar, who took over from Vladislav as the paper’s owner for a few years after the end of the First World War. Ribnikar, a physical chemistry professor at Belgrade University’s Natural Mathematics Faculty, was the author of 68 scientific and 40 professional works, one monograph and six books, including “Catalytic Acquisition of Hard Water” (1954), and “Molecular Aspects of Physical Chemistry” (1971). He has been quoted in foreign literature over 260 times, and won numerous awards. He made two appearances in the U.S. as a guest speaker.
