Gamzigrad becomes UNESCO World Heritage Site

GAMZIGRAD -- A UNESCO flag has been raised at the archaeological site of Felix Romuliana in Gamzigrad.

The site is now included on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites, which, in the opinion of Deputy Culture Minister Miomir Korać, signals the beginning of a new life for the district.

”In doing this, we have met our obligations in the same year that, at the 31st session of the UNESCO committee, Gamzigrad was declared a World Heritage Site,” said Korać. He believes this will mark the beginning of a new life for Felix Romuliana, the Roman town where in the latter half of the third century the future Roman emperor, Galeria, was born, and who dedicated the emperor’s palace to his mother.

“Felix Romuliana has to become a jewel in what we have to offer, and what we have is a brand,” said the minister, reiterating that 17 Roman emperors had been born in what is today Serbia.

“That should be our brand, spectacular enough to enrich the World Heritage Sites not just with Gamizgrad. As a jewel and one of the most important locations it ought to be one of the stops on a route linking all the imperial towns from Sirmium (Sremska Mitrovica), Singidunum (Belgrade), Viminacium, then Đerdap where Trajan’s Table and Bridge are located, a wonder of the world from the second century AD, through to Felix Romuliana, Median, and Naissus (Niš),” he suggested.

That 600km-long imperial road, Korać feels, is an economically viable project, that would ensure the preservation of so-called non-material heritage.

What we need in Belgrade, really, is a suspension bridge. We need a bridge that will suspend our doubts about ever having enough viable bridges. We need a bridge that will suspend our disbelief about the dangers ...
