BELGRADE --
Rasim Ljajiĉ says around 400,000 children in Serbia are poor, and half that number live in extreme poverty.
The minister of labor and social policy announced a number of measures for improving the conditions of the youngest.
"As many as 46 percent of children do not have a daily meal, while the situation in education is disastrous, with as many as 78 percent of Roma not completing primary education," Ljajiĉ told a press conference marking the start of Children's Week.
At the opening ceremony, Ljajiĉ announced a number of concrete measures and the creation of a legal framework that would contribute to improving children’s circumstances and creating the conditions for a safe and happy childhood for the nation’s youngest citizens.
UNICEF Acting Representative in Serbia Maria-Luisa Fornara said that the democratic changes in Serbia had helped improve the situation of children in the country, but that over 300,000 children were still poor.
