Graffiti reading “death to all Serbs” appeared Sunday on the wall of an elementary school in Gnjilane, Kosovo. “Meanwhile, another slogan, 'I am proud to be Albanian' was written in front of the gate surrounding the church of St. Nicholas in Gnjilane,” church security guard Vlastimir Djordjevic told KiM radio, FoNet agency reported Wednesday. Anti-Serb graffiti appears in Gnjilane He added that the remaining Serbs living in the Kosovo Pomoravlje feel ill at ease and intimidated as a result of the slogans. Even though Kosovo Police Service (KPS) representatives say they have launched an investigation into the graffiti incident, Serbs living in Gnjilane are skeptical the perpetrators will be caught. “We have no confidence in the KPS. Serbs in Gnjilane are scattered around, living in various parts of the town. Most of them are elderly people, living alone. There are few Serb families left. We see the church as our meeting place, where we feel safe,” a local told B92. Regarding the incident that took place on Monday evening in Gracanica, when three unidentified persons kidnapped and reportedly raped a Serb girl in Gracanica, severly beating her boyfriend, KPS representatives pledged to work intensively on locating and arresting the assailants. The atack is believed to have been ethnically motivated. Commenting on recent occurences, Oliver Ivanovic of the Serb List for Kosovo said that not enough attention is being paid to the social situation in the province. He warned of a possible increase of such incidents, should Kosovo police and society as a whole keep turning their back on the real state of affairs on the field. “Preoccupation with political issues seems to have diverted attention from something that is more than evident - social tensions are looming large,” he said. “Such incidents may become more frequent unless the KPS and society as a whole commit to dealing with the issue,” Ivanovic stressed, warning of the alarming presence of drugs and narcotics in everyday life in Kosovo that also may take its toll.
