Vice with 43 carcinogens attached

Experts consider smoking the prime cause of death of 85 to 90 percent of those who succumb to lung cancer. The number of cigarettes and the length of time that an individual continues to smoke increase that risk.

Compared to non-smokers, long-term smokers are 22 times more likely to get the disease.

Passive smoking also increases chances of lung cancer, the article says.

Those who give up smoking now, can hope to have the risk-levels reduced to that of non-smokers only after 15 years.

However, considering that tobacco smoke contains as many as 43 carcinogens, including polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons and traces of radioactive elements- for example, smoke from tobacco grown with phosphate fertilizers contains polonium 210 – giving up smoking seems well worth the effort.
