Mental health strategy in Serbia
Vojislav Ćurčić, Vice President of the National Committee for Mental Health said that the major goal is to adjust the system to contemporary concepts of mental health, remarking that Serbia has its own specific problems.“The system should be organized and adapted to the needs of people suffering from mental illnesses, and should help the patients integrate into their local communities as much as possible. The number of people diagnosed with depression and psychological trauma has increased, which is easy to understand if we considered all the turbulent events in our recent past”, Simić said.
The President of the National Committee for Mental Health Dušica Lečić-Toševski said that 27 percent of Serbian citizens showed signs of post-traumatic stress disorder and warned that the number of people seeking mental health-care rose by 13 percent from 1999 to 2002.
