More serious punishment for hate crimes

The chief imam of the Muslim community in Niš, Mustafa Jusufspahić, is content with the quick reaction of the police, but said that the whole incident could have been avoided. Jusufspahić said that this is the fourth attack on the city mosque.

“This was so vulgar and such a serious attack, especially because there were people there trying to pray and the insults were so extreme that they could not ignore them any longer and had to react to them. We called the police. A police officer, who was supposed to be there, would have probably prevented the incident if he was there, but he was not at his post.” Mustafa Jusufspahić said.

Jusufspahić called on the courts to implement more severe punishment on those who desecrate religious buildings and insult people based on religion or nationality.

“Those who torched the mosque in the ‘March riots’ were sentenced to five months. That is not adequate punishment and I hope that the courts will not give inadequate verdicts and stimulate crime. I hope that state of Serbia, the city of Niš, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the courts will do everything that is in the best interest of their citizens, regardless of faith.” Jusufspahić said.
