Sarajevo won’t sign war crimes agreement

This agreement was recently signed by the Serbian and Croatian prosecutors.

Jurčević said that he has signed an agreement with Serbia and Croatia for cooperation and the transfer of information and documentation regarding war crimes cases.

“That means that the Serbian and Croatian prosecutions, if they have information regarding war crime which are being tried in Sarajevo, are obligated to give us this information. We are also responsible to transfer information, if we have it, regarding the war crimes cases, to the governments in Croatia and Serbia.” Jurčević said.

However, Jurčević told Bosnia-Herzegovina Presidency official Sulejman Tihić that he is absolutely against the signing of the agreement for having the cases held in the countries in which the suspect is located, stating that this is not in the interest of Bosnia-Herzegovina, because most of the crimes were committed on its territory.

“I would never in my dreams consider signing this agreement. Everyone who has any information on how I look at the way in which war crimes cases are handled knows that I, with my heart and soul, insist that the trials be held in the countries in which the crimes were allegedly committed.” Jurčević told the daily Dnevni Avaz.

He said that he is calling on Bosnia-Herzegovina politicians to solve the question of extraditing war crimes indictees with Zagreb and Belgrade, but not to try and implement something that he has spent years fighting against. He said that a political agreement needs to be made before any kind of agreement can be signed.

According to earlier reports, the Bosnia-Herzegovina prosecution was expected to sign the agreement along with Serbia and Croatia. The initiative for making regional ties closer strengthened after the showing of the Oluja war crimes video in June, after which the first meeting was held between the war crimes prosecutors of all three countries.
