“Drunkenness and slush” in Guča

KULA -- Teofil Pančić said that the festival in Guča is a “parade of drunkenness and slush” presented as an original Serbian identity.

“I find it especially annoying when someone uses the argument of how many foreigners visit Guča. They visit because they can behave like pigs and no one will hold it against them there, while they cannot behave like that at home.” Pančić said at an independent journalists of Vojvodina forum in Kula.

The journalist said that the way in which Guča is being presented by the media is nothing more than the promotion of the image of Serbs as a good-willed savages who makes their lives one large Guča festival and do nothing constructive.

According to Pančić, the Exit festival gives Serbia some dignity, not Guča.

Historian Branka Prpa said that the festival in Guča is a “cultural model of the agrarian society which produces this kind of entertainment.”

She said that the problem is not the festival itself, but the way in which the political elite and the media present the festival as something essentially and authentically Serbian.

“The fact that the Serbian Government favours Guča imposes a cultural paradigm in the society.” Prpa said, adding that it is “problematic that Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Koštunica will be visiting Guča, but did not visit Exit.”

The discussion in Kula was organised and supported by the Fund for an Open Society in Serbia.
