No agreement with protesting students
21 November 2009 | 09:18 | Source: B92
BELGRADE -- The Education Ministry has not reached an agreement with students regarding their tuition demands.

Students have announced that new protests would be held on Monday.

Meetings were held between student representatives, Education Ministry officials and faculty officials regarding the student’s demands on Friday.

Student Vladimir Smuđa announced that there would be new protests on November 23.

“The protest will begin from two directions, at noon we are heading from the faculty in Voždovac…and a half hour later there will be students coming from the plateau in front of the Philosophy Faculty, and we will meet at the Slavija square at about 14:00 CET and head to the Serbia government building,” Smuđa said.

“It is important to mention that this is a united protest of the Belgrade University and the Art University. We will demand that someone from the government sees us, and we no longer agree to talks with the Education Ministry. We want someone exclusively from the government to meet with us. If that does not happen, we will continue the protests every day,” he said.

The Ministry proposed that students with 48 to 59 points, who are not on the budget list of students who do not pay tuition, would have the state pay 20 percent of their tuition, and the rest would be split half and half by the school and student.

That proposal was deemed unacceptable by student representatives.
