NATO and Montenegro sign protocol on accession

This day carries a special symbolism for Montenegro because it coincides with the celebrations of the decade of its independence, Djukanovic said before the signing.

By signing the protocol at the level of foreign ministers you have given great recognition to our efforts on the path to full membership, Djukanovic said.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that Montenegro's reforms have come a long way.

Montenegro has reformed laws, built institutions and found its place in the international community, encouraging cooperation and compromise in the Balkans, Stoltenberg said.

"As of today, Montenegro will have a seat at NATO's table," Stoltenberg said.

Once the ratification process is over, Montenegro will become the 29th member of NATO.
