Croatia's FM says she could run for top UN job

She said that her candidacy in itself would be "a huge plus for Croatia," as she would be the country's first candidate for that position. Pusic added that the idea "originated from sources outside of Croatia."

It has long been speculated that Pusic had the ambition of running for the top UN office. An EU job was mentioned as another possible future engagement for the politician.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's second term will expire at the end of 2016.

UNESCO Director Irena Bokova of Bulgaria and former Slovenian President Danilo Turk have so far been mentioned as future candidates that had received the backing of their respective countries.

The media mentioned Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak and one of his predecessors Jan Kubis, but also Serbia's former Foreign Minister and former UN General Assembly President Vuk Jeremic.

UN's secretary-general is appointed by the General Assembly on the proposal of the Security Council, coming from one of the five regional groups.

A candidate must first obtain the official endorsement of their country, which formally puts forward their candidacy.

In the event that the Security Council cannot agree on one candidate, the decision is referred to the UN General Assembly, "although there legal dilemmas about the decision-making process in this case," Beta reported.
