Albanian officer killed in Spain while trafficking drugs

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been informed about a serious incident in Spain when that country's security forces brought down a helicopter transporting drugs from Morocco. The helicopter was piloted by a major of our armed forces," Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama said, according to the media in Tirana.

The pilot and his copilot died on Wednesday when their helicopter loaded with hashish hit an electric pole and crashed in southern Spain, the Spanish police said.

A local newspaper in the town of Malaga reported that the helicopter carried between 800 and 900 kilograms of the drug and was painted black to avoid detection at night.

In the past years the Spanish authorities broke up several criminal rings that used helicopters to smuggle hashish from Morocco to southern Spain.
