EU's Ashton urges Bosnian politicians "to show leadership"

"That is very important. There are many leaders in Bosnia-Herzegovina and it is time that they demonstrate leadership, and we will support them in that," Ashton was quoted as saying.

Asked to comment on a statement made by High Representative in Bosnia Valentin Inzko, who told the Vienna daily Kurier that "should the situation in Bosnia escalate," the sending of EU troops to that country should be considered, Ashton said that she believed that Inzko "spoke about a hypothetical situation."

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule has said that the European Commission as a whole and Fule's office are carefully monitoring the developments in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

"Fule as always is carefully monitoring the situation in Bosnia, as well as in other countries covered by his department," Peter Stano told the Fena news agency, adding that "it is known how much attention and energy the commissioner is devoting to Bosnia-Herzegovina, trying to help solve the burning issues."

Although this is not on their agenda, EU ministers meeting today in Brussels are also expected to discuss the situation in the Balkan country that has seen rioting during the past several days.

On Monday, several thousand demonstrators once again gathered in Sarajevo and demanded the resignation of Nermin Nikišić, the prime minister of the Muslim-Croat entity, the Federation (FBiH), and all his ministers.

The protesters gave Nikišić and his cabinet until 19:00 CET to step down, and when the prime minister announced he had no intention of resigning, they blocked central parts of Sarajevo bringing traffic to a standstill.
