PODGORICA Montenegrin Foreign Minister Igor Luksic has said that he "cannot understand why the opposition criticized him for his views on Syria." The Montenegrin Parliament's International Relations Committee, on the initiative of the opposition, will on October 1 invite Luksic for "a control hearing" over the decision for the country to join in accusations against the Syrian government. Montenegrin FM baffled by criticism of Syria statement The hearing was initiated by the opposition Democratic Front, who said Montenegro's joint statement against the Syrian government, accusing it of launching an alleged chemical weapons attack, "inflicted great damage to Podgorica in the foreign policy area." "I have been in the spotlight over Syria, but I still do not understand why. I have the impression that those representatives of the opposition who are commenting on the joint statement neither read it, nor our statements, "said Luksic told the Dnevne Novine newspaper. He added that Montenegro, "as a member of the Human Rights Council of the United Nations felt obligated not to ignore similar problems in other countries, as a country that has had the experience of war in the immediate environment, and that still has the problem of dealing with the issue of refugees." "The joint statement on Syria was signed by the United States, Germany, France, Italy, Turkey and many other countries. That statement is congruent with what Catherine Ashton said on behalf of the EU," Luksic was further quoted. According to him, the question now was "why someone was challenging Montenegro joining the statement, given that the stated goal of everyone was membership in the EU." "Opposition parties declaratively advocate for European integration, but in fact they have a problem to explain to their electorate what they mean. That is confirmed by this example. They must read more carefully what we have communicated and what we have joined," Luksic told the daily. Igor Luksic (Tanjug, file) Tanjug
