SKOPJE Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia have asked the European Commission to lower the roaming call rates for the citizens of the three countries traveling to the EU. The three telecommunications ministers signed a letter addressed to the EC in Skopje on Wednesday. "Roaming letter to EU example of good regional cooperation" Serbian Minister of Trade and Telecommunications Rasim Ljajic said that the signing of the letter is an example of good regional cooperation. “I hope that the times of conflicts and unnecessary rhetoric are far behind us and that in this way we can actually create a good climate for foreign investment,” said Ljajic. The Macedonians and Serbs pay as many as seven times the cost of roaming calls, something not quite in accordance with market and even legal principles, said Macedonian Information Society and Administration Minister Ivo Ivanovski. The Macedonians pay up to eight times the incoming calls rates and three to four times the rates per one megabyte of internet traffic, which means that around a million euros flows into the EU from Macedonia every year, Ivanovski told reporters after signing the letter. He pointed out that a few days ago, the EU lowered the roaming rates for EU countries by 36 percent, and Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia are demanding that their citizens can benefit of the same services just like the EU citizens. The signing of the joint letter to the EU is the first document in which the three countries express a common view in their communication with the European Union. We are particularly interested in this service, as Montenegro is a tourist destination, said Minister for Information Society and Telecommunications Vujica Lazovic. The three ministers agreed to meet next in Montenegro in September, when they should sign a memorandum on cooperation in telecommunications. Tanjug
