BELGRADE Serbian government’s Office for Cooperation with Diaspora and Serbs in the region Slavka Draskovic says intolerance was expressed at a protest in Zagreb Sunday. She stressed that intolerance toward Serbs’ script, culture and tradition had been shown at the protest against the Cyrillic alphabet and its introduction in the Croatian town of Vukovar. “Intolerance was expressed at Zagreb protest” Draskovic expressed hope that the Croatian government would continue to insist on the respect of the Constitution that guaranteed minorities the right to their language and script, reads the office’s release. “The rally additionally upset the Serbs in Croatia who live in an atmosphere of uncertainty,” she pointed out and added that she expected the state of Croatia not only to distance itself from such positions but to prevent further escalation of extremism. According to the constitutional Law on Ethnic Minorities’ Rights, Serbs in Croatia have the right to use their language and script in municipalities, towns and districts where they make up 33 percent of the total population according to the 2011 census. According to census results, Serbs can exercise the right in 21 municipalities and two towns – in Vukovar, where 35 percent of the total population are Serbs, and in Vrbovsko. The release reads that Draskovic has spoken before the parliament’s Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the region about problems of Serbs in Croatia. She also presented a report on her visit to Croatia on February 25-27. The Headquarters for Defense of Croat Vukovar, that organized the protest on Sunday and consists mostly of associations of war veterans, issued an ultimatum to the Croatian authorities to launch a procedure to declare Vukovar a town of “special piety” in the next three months and prevent the Cyrillic alphabet from being introduced as an official script in the town. Drašković expressed hope that the Croatian government would continue to insist on the respect of the Constitution that guaranteed minorities the right to their language and script, reads the office’s release.
