ZAGREB Former Croatian PM and HDZ party leader Ivo Sanader has been sentenced to a total of ten years in prison on war profiteering and corruption charges. The ruling of the Zagreb court makes Sanader the first premier from the former Yugoslav region to be found guilty of war profiteering. Court rules Croatia's ex-PM is war profiteer Sanader was sentenced to seven years and six months in prison on that count of the indictment, and to three years and six months for taking bribes. The judge merged these two sentences into a single, ten-year jail term. Sanader has also been ordered to, within the next 15 days, reimburse the state with EUR 3.6mn that he had gained unlawfully, while the Dioki Holding company must pay EUR 5mn back to the state budget. The court found that Sanader took some EUR 480,000 as commission when Austria's Hypo Alpe Adria Bank approved a loan to Croatia in the mid-1990s. He served as deputy foreign minister at the time. The court also ascertained that he took EUR 10mn in bribes from Hungary's oil company MOL in exchange for handing over the controlling stake in Croatia's INA company. In its closing argument last week, the prosecution sought the maximum penalty of 15 years in prison, while Sanader's defense asked for his acquittal. The former Croatian prime minister is currently undergoing another corruption trial in Zagreb, where he stands accused of transferring money from state institutions and companies to the "slush fund" of his HDZ party. Sanader was sentenced to seven years and six months in prison on that count of the indictment, and to three years and six months for taking bribes. The judge merged these two sentences into a single, ten-year jail term.

Sanader has also been ordered to, within the next 15 days, reimburse the state with EUR 3.6mn that he had gained unlawfully, while the Dioki Holding company must pay EUR 5mn back to the state budget.
