Around 10 million of Greeks will today vote in the parliamentary elections. Polling stations will be open from 7:00 until 19:00. The record high number of parties, 32, that are running in the elections shows that it is hard to expect that a single party will win enough votes to form a stable government. Greece votes in crucial parliamentary elections The country needs a stable government to pull it out from the crisis and from the brink of bankruptcy. Two most powerful parties, PASOK and New Democracy, have lost popularity ahead of the elections. Preliminary results will be published immediately after the polling stations are closed. It is expected that as many as ten parties will win more than three percent of the votes that is necessary to cross the threshold. Small parties and even far-right parties such as Chrisi Avgi (Golden Dawn) have an opportunity to step on the Greek political scene. Chrisi Avgi won only 0.2 percent of the votes in 2009 but it is today expected to win five percent. Chrisi Avgi and most of the small parties are against conditions imposed by foreign countries. The EU and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) could suspend the financial aid to Greece if the country does not implement new austerity measures in June. PASOK and New Democracy leaders claim that Greece’s future will only be certain in the hands of pro-European parties. According to polls, New Democracy is expected to win majority of votes, around 25 percent, which will not be enough to form the next government.
