The Romanian government on Monday submitted its collective resignation "in order to protect the country's stability", PM Emil Boc has announced. The government fell "in order to defuse political and social tension in the country", caused by strict austerity measures introduced by Boc's cabinet. He called on politicians in the country to show maturity and work to elect a new government quickly. He added that the IMF projected Romania's economic growth at two percent this year - "less than expected, but more than EU average": Romanians had been gathering for protests for days, asking for President Traian Basescu and Boc to resign, and urgently call presidential and parliamentary elections. News agencies reported that Boc, who is also leader of the Democratic-Liberal Party, decided to step down after a series of protests against the measures.
