The Serbian state nationalism, as a dominant ideology, is still denying the Montenegrin identity, Milo Djukanovic has said. However, the results of a census held in April in Montenegro confirm an overall stability, the former president and PM and now Montenegro's ruling DPS party leader noted. Party leader: Serbia denying Montenegrin identity Djukanovic believes that "not many things changed in Serbia’s attitude toward Montenegro, including the recent history”. “The Serbian state nationalism, as a dominant ideology of the local political public, whoever is in power, is still claiming Montenegro and denying the Montenegrin national, cultural and religious identity,” he told Podgorica-based daily Pobjeda. Djukanovic added that Montenegro “should not be fooled with make-believe brotherly recommendations such as - fine, you are independent but give up on your national identity, culture, church and language”. “Because anyone who gives us such advise is not doing it because of brotherly motives, they are leaving a chance to someone to ask us again in ten or 20 years: well all right, since we are the same, why do we need two Serb states next to each other? And that means another meaningless circle. Welcome to 1918,” Djukanovic was quoted as saying. He stressed that after all those years a part of the Montenegrin opposition, that had been against Montenegro’s independence, had “Serbia’s overall support, including financial”, adding that he was "not talking only about pro-Serbian parties in Montenegro". “There are parties that grew on a political platform very close to the former Liberal Alliance’s ‘Little Cabinet’ and in the meantime they rushed into the great Serbian nationalism or they impersonalized their ideology to such a degree that it is completely clear today that their leading idea is making money,” - Djukanovic told the daily. "Montenegro has kept and strengthened its stability in the last five years, despite the fact that it renewed its independence in the time of political turmoil, even national division," the DPS leader concluded.
