Montenegro and Serbia are celebrating the fifth anniversary since they renewed their independence. The two countries separated after more than 55 percent of Montenegrin citizens voted in favor of an independent state in a referendum. Montenegro celebrates Independence Day Today both countries strive toward EU membership. Montenegro is an EU candidate while Serbia is hoping to become one by the end of the year. Still, relations between Belgrade and Podgorica are not so smooth. The two countries failed to reach a dual citizenship agreement and Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) leader Milo Djukanovic has additionally stirred the pot with his statements about theindependent united church. Montenegro will hold the central celebration in the town of Cetinje. Prime Minister Igor Luksic will host a reception for state and foreign officials. “The EU candidate status is Montenegro’s biggest achievement since it became independent,” former Serbian Ambassador to Montenegro Ognjen Pribicevic thinks.
