Protests over Hague Tribunal’s verdict, sentencing Croat Generals Ante Gotovina to 24 and Mladen Markac to 18 years in prison, continue across Croatia. The third Croat general, Ivan Cermak, was acquitted. Protests continue in Croatia Several thousand war veterans and citizens gathered in downtown Zagreb. Even though the organizers earlier announced a mass protest dubbed “For homeland”, only about 5,000 protesters came to Ban Jelacic Square. The crowd has been cheering “Betrayal, betrayal”, “Thieves, thieves”, “Jaca, go away”, referring to Croat Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor. Speakers at the rally have pointed out that they will not accept the Hague Tribunal’s ruling because it “turned a victim into aggressor”. Kosor this morning met with representatives of 40 war veteran associations that do not support the protests. Cermak also attended the meeting in order to discuss the situation and determine future legal steps. Protests in support of the sentenced Croat generals were held in numerous towns across Croatia. The most serious incident happened in the town of Split, where Mayor Zeljko Kerum was verbally and physically attacked by the crowd. (Tanjug)
