Protests in Sarajevo over Divjak’s arrest

Several thousand people gathered in a peaceful protest in Sarajevo on Saturday, calling for the release of wartime Bosnia-Herzegovina Army General Jovan Divjak.

Several thousand people gathered in a peaceful protest in Sarajevo on Saturday, calling for the release of wartime Bosnia-Herzegovina Army General Jovan Divjak. Divjak was arrested based on a warrant from Serbia charging him with a war crime committed in Sarajevo in 1992. Protests in Sarajevo over Divjak’s arrest The protests began by gathering of people outside the Austrian Embassy in Sarajevo and were completed with throwing of snowballs and oranges at the premises of the Serbian Embassy. The buildings occupied by the Serbian and Austrian Embassies and other important institutions in Sarajevo were being guarded by a strong police force and there were no incidents. This was the second protest organized in Sarajevo over Divjak's arrest in Vienna. Divjak was arrested on late Thursday, based on a Serbian arrest warrant over crimes committed in Sarajevo's Dobrovoljacka Street in May 1992. During an agreed withdrawal of members of the former Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) on May 3, 1992 a total of 42 JNA soldiers and officers were killed and 73 of them wounded.
