Exiting Croat President Stjepan Mesic has congratulated the new head of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC), Patriarch Irinej. “I have received the news of your election as the patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church with pleasure,” the Croatian president wrote in his message, pointing out that it was “joyous news for all members of the SPC in Croatia”. Mesic in message to new patriarch “I emphasize with pleasure that relations between the state authorities and the SPC are very good and in constant progress,” wrote Mesic, and expressed his belief that Irinej’s election would “contribute to further improvement to life and work of the SPC in Croatia, development of its institutions and the overall religious life”. “Furthermore, let me express my belief that your work will also contribute to the further development of the ecumenical life and inter-religious dialogue, as well as values of peace, mutual respect and acceptance of all people of good will,” Mesic stated and wished the new patriarch success.
