The Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) leader and Croat PM Jadranka Kosor confirmed that party honorary president Ivo Sanader had been expelled from the party. Speaking at a special news conference after the party's leadership meeting, Kosor said Sanader's public appearance on Jan. 3, without the party's knowledge, had "caused irreparable damage to the party", Beta reports. Ex-Croat PM expelled from party Kosor declined to say whether measures will be taken also against some other party members, including Parliament Speaker Luka Bebic, who has supported Sanader. Sanader's expulsion, according to Kosor, was backed by 16 party presidency members, three were against, while two members abstained from voting. In a statement to the Hina news agency, Sanader, who was not invited to the party presidency session, said he accepts the presidency's decision, if it is in the party's interest. Kosor, who is also Croatia's prime minister, said Sanader has the right to activate his MP mandate. For six months now, according to Kosor, there have been two parallel leaderships in the party, stressing that she does not want "to take the responsibility for leading the party and the cabinet, while someone else is pulling the strings."
