“Serbia must apologize to Bosnia-Herzegovina”

A Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) member of the Bosnia-Herzegovina Presidency says Serbia should apologize to Bosnia in order to have "truly good relations". “This apology must recognize genocide in Bosnia, because it is a fact proven in court. Every eluding of this terminology after the confirmation of the International Court of Justice represents a negation of genocide,” Haris Silajdzic told Belgrade daily Danas. “Serbia must apologize to Bosnia-Herzegovina” He said that Serbia should treat Bosnia “like every other country” and to behave “in a way that Croatia has been behaving for ten years already and Montenegro has since its independence.” “Only in that way, after someone from Belgrade comes and gives an official, civilized act of apology, can we really create good neighborly relations,” said Silajdzic. “Serbia must choose. It cannot elude responsibility with claims that the crimes were committed by ‘Milosevic’s regime,’ and at the same time insist that Serbia is a signatory of the Dayton Agreement. Either the crimes and Dayton signature are the acts of one man or the responsibility of both is on the state of Serbia,” he said. Silajdzic continued to state that Bosnia is “a reality in its borders and an international-legal fact,” adding that “anyone who tries to change this, will end up worse than those who tried to change it earlier.” He described his actions as being focused on EU and NATO membership for Bosnia, "as well as full implementation of Dayton". Silajdzic said that the citizens of Bosnia-Herzegovina chose a sovereign and independent Bosnia in 1992, which was immediately recognized by he UN "and all countries of the world". “The role of Serbia in that context does not differ from the role of any other UN member-state. The sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bosnia does not depend on the Dayton, but on the guarantees from the UN Charter and other norms of international law. Tying this question to the Dayton is dangerous and send a message that the sovereignty and integrity of a country depends on its internal arrangements,” said Silajdzic.
