Croatia can hope to unblocking its EU negotiations only after Zagreb responds to the Hague Tribunal’s requests. This is according to media reports of a statement made by Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen on Monday. Dutch tell Croatia to cooperate with Hague “Currently I do not see a possibility to open up the Judiciary and Fundamental Rights Chapter any time soon, but, of course, I hope that the response of the Croatian authorities to the request of the Hague Tribunal Prosecutor Serge Brammertz will make it possible,” the Dutch foreign minister said. The Hague prosecutors have been asking Zagreb to hand over Operation Storm artillery logs for a year and a half now. The Hague believes that these documents contain direct evidence about excessive and non-selective bombing of Knin and the surrounding Serb villages during the military onslaught against the country's ethnic Serb areas in 1995. Three former Croatian army generals are on trial at the Hague for the Storm war crimes. The tribunal stated that only two out of 150 such logs had been submitted to date, and added that the Croatian authorities were hiding those documents because they did not wish to compromise the position of one of the accused generals, Ante Gotovina. Official Zagreb has vehemently denied this. Verhagen was also quoted as saying that Brammertz had established permanent contacts with the Croatian authorities, and added that he would immediately notify the EU “if there were any progress concerning the artillery logs,” Croatian news agency Hina reported.
