Anarchists have been fighting running battles with police into the early hours of the morning in the streets outside Athens University. The fighting continued after a day of clashes during a protest march to mark the first anniversary of the police killing of a teenage youth last year which sparked weeks of violence. Clashes go on long into night in Athens The dean of the university is being treated in hospital for head injuries after being attacked by youths who forced their way into the building, burned the Greek flag on the roof and replaced it with their own. At least two protesters and sixteen police officers are reported to have been injured. The new socialist government in Greece deployed 6,000 riot police on the streets of the capital to prevent violence escalating to the levels reached last year. They say their tactics have proved successful with a total of 270 people arrested over the weekend. Fifteen-year-old Alex Grigoropoulos was shot by police in the city in 2008. His death sparked a series of protests which turned into demonstrations against unemployment and the effects of the economic downturn. The previous administration was heavily criticized for allowing the unrest to continue unabated for so long.
