The international community in Bosnia-Herzegovina has condemned statements by Milorad Dodik regarding the nature of war crimes committed in Sarajevo and Tuzla.

The international community in Bosnia-Herzegovina has condemned statements by Milorad Dodik regarding the nature of war crimes committed in Sarajevo and Tuzla. The war crimes in question included those committed at the open-air markets in Sarajevo and Tuzla. OHR slams Dodik statements International High Representative Valentin Inzko, OSCE Chief Gary Robinson and Council of Europe mission chief Caroline Ravaud said that the “facts of these war crimes are clear.” In a statement from the Office of the High Representative (OHR), the Republic of Srpska (RS) prime minister was said to have denied the war crimes committed in Tuzla on May 25, 1995, when 71 people were killed and more than 150 injured; in Sarajevo on February 5, 1994, when 68 were killed and 144 wounded; as well as another event at the same market in Sarajevo on August 28, 1995, when 37 people were killed and 90 wounded. “The Bosnia-Herzegovina court found Novak Djukic, the commander of the Bosnian Serb military, guilty on June 12, 2009 of the Tuzla massacre and sentenced him to 25 years in prison,” the OHR stated. The OHR reiterated that the Hague Tribunal had also sentenced to life imprisonment another Bosnian Serb commander, Stanislav Galic, for crimes against humanity, including the Markale market massacre. “The Hague court also established the responsibility of General Dragomir Milosevic for war crimes, including the massacre at the Markale market on August 28, 1995, and sentenced him to a prison term of 33 years,” the OHR added. “When such skewed facts come from an official in a position of high responsibility, an official who is obliged to uphold the Dayton Peace Accords and cooperate with the Hague Tribunal, then they are particularly irresponsible and undermine not only the institutions responsible for upholding the rule of law, but the credibility of the individual himself,” the Office concluded.
