Croatian Tourism Minister Damir Bajs said that the number of tourists visiting Croatia this year decreased by five percent. He also said that the number of nights stayed in Croatia, a total of 28.7 million in the first seven months of 2009, also decreased by three percent compared to last year. Less tourists in Croatia this year Bajs said that in the first seven months, there were some 5.3 million tourists registered, which is five percent less than in the same time last year. “A decrease exists, but it is acceptable, especially in relation to the competition,” he said, adding that 2.5 million tourists visited in July, which is three percent less than in July 2008. Despite the decrease, Croatia’s numbers this year are better than other Mediterranean countries such as Spain, France Greece, Portugal and Malta are experiencing, with only Tunisia recording an increased number of tourists. “According to the information we have, the data from early August confirms the decrease in tourism statistics, and the characteristics of this season will continue in August, with more ‘last minute’ reservations,” Bajs said. The market that suffered most was tourists coming from Russia and Hungary, which decreased in number by 20 percent. At the same time, however, tourists coming from smaller markets like Ukraine, Serbia, Finland, Spain, Switzerland and Bulgaria, increased in number, which Bajs said resulted from a strong advertisement campaign in these countries.
