Slovenia will assume the six-month rotating presidency of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers from Spain today. Slovenian Foreign Minister Samuel Zbogar will outline Slovenia’s priorities during its presidency, stemming from the obligations of the last Council of Europe summit of 2005 in Warsaw. Slovenia takes over CoE chair These include encouraging the rule of law at state and inter-state level, the promotion of human rights, consolidating democratic standards and the rule of law in South-East Europe, promoting the rights of Roma and other ethnic minorities, children’s rights, and other priorities. Slovenia will continue to urge for reforms of the European Courts of Human Rights to improve expeditiousness. Today’s session will also focus on the conflict in Georgia and the state of democracy in Europe, especially in Belarus. Ministers will also mark the 60th anniversary of the Council of Europe’s creation, an institution numbering 47 member-states. Slovenian will be presiding over the Council of Europe until November 18, when it will hand over to Switzerland. Around 50 meetings and events are expected to take place in Ljubljana, Strasbourg and other cities during Slovenia’s six-month presidency.
