Montenegro gets green light from EU

The EU Council of Ministers has approved consideration of Montenegro's EU candidacy application. In line with the procedure stipulated in article 49 of the EU Treaty, the Council has solicited the opinion of the EC on Podgorica’s application, it was announced in Luxembourg yesterday. Montenegro gets green light from EU Montenegrin President Filip Vujanovic, Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic and Speaker Ranko Krivokapic submitted the application to the EU on December 15, 2008, the statement added. Citing the Council’s declarations of December 8 and 9, 2008, it was stated that Montenegro had achieved success in implementing its obligations from the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA), including trade measures, which was a key element in analyzing applications. Working on the basis of the expressed consensus for further EU enlargement in EU Council decisions of December 14 and 15, the Council repeated that the Western Balkans’ future lay in the EU. Each individual country’s progress depended on their efforts to meet the Copenhagen and SAA conditions, the statement concluded.
