EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn hopes that Croatian and Slovenian stances regarding the border dispute will begin to converge at this week’s meeting. At a press conference on Monday following a meeting with Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic in Brussels, Rehn said that his goal was to find a way to resolve the dispute in order to unfreeze Croatia’s negotiations with the EU as soon as possible. Rehn hopeful of “convergence of stances” Rehn’s latest proposal for solving the border dispute drew contrasting responses from the two countries: Slovenia gave its answer immediately, in late March, while Croatia responded “in person,” with its foreign minister outlining to Rehn Croatia’s own proposal, based on three charters. The commissioner said that both answers were very serious and intellectually very well founded, adding that European Commission legal experts were evaluating them. He confirmed that he would be meeting with the foreign ministers of both countries on Wednesday—first individually, then jointly, and finally together with the EU presiding trio.
