Slovenian Prime Minister Borut Pahor wants the issue of “erased” persons to be resolved as soon as possible. He said that paying compensation to these individuals would not imperil Slovenia’s financial position. The “erased” are citizens from the former Yugoslav republics, whose names were erased from the Slovenian electoral registrar because they did not request Slovenian citizenship. Pahor: Slovenia to tackle problem of “erased” Slovenian opposition parties believe that further concessions to the “erased”, already initiated by the Interior Ministry, could spark an avalanche of compensation claims. As a result, the Slovenian Democratic Party, led by former Prime Minister Janez Jansa, has already submitted an application for the impeachment of Interior Minister Katrina Kresal. Responding to opposition accusations that compensation payments would compromise the budget, Pahor said that “the fact that the erasure was done illegally does not in itself establish responsibility for compensation.” He said that the verdicts on compensation and any further Interior Ministry decisions were not related. Pahor said that the only way a constitutional law on the “erased”, which the opposition is calling for, could be acceptable was if it was in accordance with an existing Constitutional Court ruling. That court has already, indirectly on two occasions and directly on seven occasions, decided that the erasure of these individuals from the Slovenian registrar was illegal and unconstitutional. The prime minister reminded the opposition that that act had been condemned by all leading international human rights organizations, adding that the Slovenian government and state were obliged to solve the problem of the “erased” in accordance with Slovenian laws. Last week marked the 17th anniversary since the notorious erasure of citizens from the Slovenian electoral register, leaving 25,670 people without basic human rights, such as health insurance, pensions, basic schooling and property rights. At the same time, all their documents were invalidated, including personal identification cards, passports, health documents and drivers’ licenses. Most of the “erased” were Serbs.
