Hague Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz will be in Sarajevo today to visit the Bosnia-Herzegovina Prosecutor’s Office. Brammertz has been in the region since Monday, visiting Croatia, and will be in Belgrade next week. Brammertz visiting Sarajevo He will be meeting with officials from the region to discuss cooperation with the Hague Tribunal. Based on these talks, Brammertz will prepare a report to be presented to the United Nations Security Council in December. Not much attention has been paid to Brammertz’s visit to Sarajevo, however. While visits by former chief prosecutor Carla Del Ponte would send state officials into a state of panic, Brammertz’s visit has created little fuss. His visit to Croatia was not covered extensively by the Bosnian media, because there were many other European officials in Sarajevo at the time discussing new strategies for increasing European responsibilities in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Not much is expected of Brammertz’s visit to Sarajevo since Radovan Karadzic has already been arrested and extradited, while Ratko Mladic has long been considered Serbia’s responsibility and not a concern of the Bosnia-Herzegovina authorities. Brammertz will tell officials in Sarajevo that he hopes that all fugitives will be extradited to The Hague before the Tribunal shuts down, and he will be speaking with judicial officials regarding the ability of the Bosnian courts to handle war crime trials delegated by the Hague Tribunal. His visit to Serbia will be a lot more “high profile” than his visit to Sarajevo, as it comes on the eve of the submission of his December report to the UN Security Council.
