Montenegro is viewed by the EU as a country offering logistic protection to sections of international organized crime groups, says PZP leader Nebojsa Medojevic. Medojevic said that this was why the EU had reservations about Montenegro’s application for candidate status. “Crime hampering Montenegrin EU hopes” The Movement for Changes (PZP) leader said that the main reason was the fact that Montenegro was not ready to strengthen administrative negotiating capacities, meaning that the EU was unable to effectively evaluate how long and effectively negotiations would go. He said that a big problem was that the most important countries in the EU had sent many clear messages to Montenegro to “rid the country of mafia, organized crime, drug trafficking and consolidate adherence to the rule of law in Montenegro.” Medojevic said that the EU had already had enough problems with Bulgaria and some with Romania, and did not want to enter communications with “a small country that has a big problem with a lack of clear political will to deal with organized crime.” “That is the key message that the Montenegrin government wants to keep from people, that as long as the status quo remains in Montenegro, there is no point in applying,” the PZP leader said, adding that Montenegro’s progress towards the EU was in the hands of the ruling coalition.
