Montenegro to file candidate status application

Montenegro intends to apply for EU candidate status by the end of this year, says Deputy Prime Minister Gordana Đurović.

Montenegro intends to apply for EU candidate status by the end of this year, says Deputy Prime Minister Gordana Djurovic. Djurovic has informed French Ambassador Bernard Garanche of Podgorica's plans after he advised the Montenegrin government, via the Podgorica media, to defer submission of their application. Montenegro to file candidate status application During a meeting with Garanche, Djurovic said that she expected France’s support, as the EU presiding country, for Montenegro’s EU path. The government stated that Djurovic and Garanche had “expressed a shared belief that a suitable solution, procedure and dynamic would be found, in order to balance out the EU’s arguments and Montenegro’s requests and arguments“ over the date of submission of the application for EU membership status. Montenegro has already deferred the application for EU membership on one occasion already, in June, and according to political predictions, any further delays could have serious political repercussions in the country. When deferring the date the first time, Montenegrin officials solemnly pledged that the application would be filed by the end of the year.
