EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn says that Macedonia has not met the necessary conditions for beginning accession talks. As a result, Rehn has advised the European Commission in his report not to approve the start of these negotiations on November 5. Rehn: Macedonia falling short of EU standards The European Commission will submit its annual progress reports on countries in the process of EU association, where all the standards in the most important sectors, such as the economy, legal reform and tackling corruption, are evaluated. The Macedonian government does not seem surprised by this assessment. Macedonia’s European integration process will continue more intensively after November 5, said Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Ivica Boceski in the only reaction given to Rehn’s evaluation thus far. Even though Macedonia has had EU candidate status for three years, Skopje will not be able to begin negotiations because it has not met all the necessary conditions, mainly reforms in the courts, police and public administration, and tackling corruption. There is also an added condition for Macedonia, after the last elections held there were deemed to fall short of European standards. It is yet to be seen how the Macedonian government will react to its failure to achieve the necessary conditions, and whether it will be blamed on the “name” dispute with Greece and Athens’ influence in Brussels.
