Macedonia’s prime minister and president are at odds with each other over the name dispute between Macedonia and Greece. Greece has been opposed to Macedonia’s name since the country declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, stating that the name is historically Greek and that the very name could constitute a territorial claim on the northern province of Greece bearing the same name. Macedonian PM, president clash over name dispute After consultations between Macedonian President Branko Crvenkovski, Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski and Foreign Minister Antonio Milososki, Crvenkovski directly accused Gruevski of obstructing the talks with Greece, and put the blame squarely on him. “I am calling on the prime minister to be more responsible in these important times for Macedonia, and to be up to meeting these challenges, in other words—to be a real prime minister,” Crvenkovski told reporters after the meeting. He said that Gruevski had not made his view on the country’s name clear and denied that the problem could come down to intolerance or a political clash. “I agree that we are dealing with conceptual decisions, I did not have a chance to hear the views of Prime Minister Gruevski regarding the envoy’s (UN mediator Mathew Nimetz) last proposal, and we have still haven’t come to any modifications, proposals or suggestions from our side to be given to Nimetz with the goal of improving that proposal,” Crvenkovski explained. An hour earlier, after his meeting with Crvenkovski, Gruevski said that the meeting had been constructive, and that he did not wish to divulge any details, which was in the best interests of the negotiating process. “We were informed of everything that Mr. Crvenkovski thinks that we should be informed of—his meeting with Mr. Nimetz and other meetings he had in New York. We listened to what he had to say, now we will wait and see what kind of proposal Nimetz gives us,” the prime minister said. Nimetz had separate meetings last week in New York with Crvenkovski and Milososki, and the next meeting was scheduled for the first week in October.
