Montenegrin PM Milo Djukanovic says that “certain parts of the international community“ expect Podgorica to recognize Kosovo. “There are expectations in certain parts of the international community, and those expectations aren’t surprising. If we want to be part of the European and Euro-Atlantic community, then our partners from those communities expect us to follow the main foreign policy paths of that community,” Djukanovic told journalists in Berane. Asked whether and when Montenegro would recognize Kosovo’s unilateral independence, the prime minister replied that it was “the duty of the authorities to be guided, first and foremost, by state interests.”

Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) deputy leader Svetozar Marović recently acknowledged that there was pressure on Montenegro to make its position clear on Kosovo’s status, while the U.S. and UK ambassadors in Podgorica have said that their governments expect the countries of the region to establish diplomatic relations with Priština.
