Not enough progress has been made in the Macedonia name dispute that would suggest Skopje might be able to join NATO on July 9, say the U.S. and Greece. July 9 is the date of the next NATO summit, where Macedonia is hoping to receive an invitation for membership together with Croatia and Albania. Greece: No progress in name row However, following a meeting yesterday in Berlin between U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis over the possibility of Greece withholding its veto on Macedonian membership, the chances of this look increasingly slim. Athens continues to demand a settlement to the 17-year long wrangle with Skopje over Macedonia’s rights to a name that Greece considers her own. Bakoyannis said that her talks with Rice had been sincere and frank, the “character of the meeting informative”, ahead of the arrival in Athens on Thursday and in Skopje the next day of UN negotiator Matthew Nimetz. “I voiced my hope that the talks would end successfully, in the hope that the Macedonian side will cease its pre-election rhetoric and get into the essence of the talks,” said the Greek foreign minister. Athens media also reported today Macedonian Foreign Minister Antonio Miloshoski’s comments in Brussels, where he said that Skopje would enter the new round of talks “decisively, and using arguments with the aim of retaining our national name.” Without referring to Greece by name, Miloshoski said that “one EU member is misusing the issue of Macedonia’s name” with regards to its European perspective, and that the “EU’s credibility must not be held hostage to irresponsible behavior.” Dora Bakoyannis (FoNet, archive)
