The U.S. State Department has warned its citizens ahead of the start of the tourist season that prostitution is taking off in Croatia. In its June report, the U.S. administration warns that Dalmatia is a “hotbed of prostitution“, reports the Slovenian 24ur.com portal. "Dalmatia hotbed of prostitution" The report adds that Croatia, because of its geographic position between North-East and Western Europe, is a transit state for that kind of crime, which has “taken off among tourists throughout Dalmatia.“ According to figures in the report, other than Croats, the other nationalities most actively involved in prostitution are Romanians, Bulgarians, and women from other Eastern European countries, although males too are victims of human trafficking. The State Department also commends the Croatian government which “purposefully engaged in the struggle against prostitution and human trafficking“ in 2007 by training a considerable number of criminalistic inspectors, thus leading to an increase in the amount of crimes uncovered. According to Iva Labrovic, head of a special criminalistic group, 69 victims of human trafficking have been discovered in Dalmatia since 2002, while prostitution tends to boom during the tourist season, says the Slovenian portal.
