The EU and Bosnia-Herzegovina signed the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) as well as a temporary trade agreement yesterday. The agreements were signed by Chairman of the tripartite Bosnian Council of Ministers Nikola Spiric, Slovenian Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel, and EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn. Bosnia’s European perspective confirmed The officials all agreed that the signing of the agreement represented a very important step in Bosnia-Herzegovina’s road towards European integration. Rehn said that the EU would continue to support Bosnia-Herzegovina, but expected its government to intensify reform processes. Spiric stated that the agreement represented a call to everyone to leave the past behind and turn towards the future in order to secure a better life and progress for all of Bosnia-Herzegovina’s citizens. He promised that the EU would be hearing more good news from the country in the future. Even though the signing of the SAA officially represents the first step towards the international community pulling out of Bosnia-Herzegovina, it was made clear on Monday that international institutions, especially the Office of the High Representative, would not be leaving until the Bosnian government was in a position to assume full responsibility for the country’s future, which was still not the case.
