Montenegrin officials in Kosovo do not want Podgorica to “consider” recognition of Kosovo independence for the time being. They are unhappy that the Montenegrin minority has not received a place in the province's new constitution. Kosovo Montenegrins demand more recognition President of the Association of Kosovo Montenegrins Slobodan Vujicic said that in talks with Montenegrin Foreign Minister Milan Rocen he had stressed that the omission of 5,000 (1.5 percent of the population) Montenegrins from the constitution was “unjust” and that the problem could be solved through an amendment. “The right of Montenegrins to have a place in the Kosovo constitution can be obtained through a constitutional amendment,” said Vujicic, adding that the Kosovo Montenegrins wanted the same treatment as Albanians in Montenegro. He said that he had received understanding from the Montenegrin foreign minister who had directed him “to a senior figure in the Kosovo government with whom he would discuss the omission from the constitution when he went to Pristina.” Vujicic said that Rocen had promised him that the state would “stand behind the association” of Kosovo Montenegrins, and would help them achieve their aims. The Association of Kosovo Montenegrins was formed almost three months ago and has around 200 members. The Montenegrin Foreign Ministry has not thus far made any comment following the meeting.
