The signing of the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) between Serbia and the EU is good for Serbia and the region, says Croatian President Stjepan Mesic. According to Croatian media, Mesic was speaking at the end of a summit of presidents of Central and South East European (CEI) countries in the Macedonian resort of Ohrid that concluded on Saturday afternoon. Mesic welcomes Serbian SAA signing Croatian media highlighted the president’s remark at the summit that all South-East European countries were firmly committed to the European path, and to the ultimate aim of EU membership. Speaking of regional cooperation, he said that certain open problems needed to be solved in the spirit of good neighborly relations, and according to EU standards. Mesic said that the international financial crisis could have serious implications for the situation in Eastern Europe and the countries in transition, as they were deep in debt, and suffering from a trade deficit. The food crisis involved a battle against poverty and hunger, and an important factor for its alleviation and regulation was the EU as the biggest donor to poor countries, the Croatian president observed.
