Jelko Kacin says that "the door of the European Union is open to countries of the Western Balkans". But the European Parliament special rapporteur for Serbia added that fully confronting the past is an inevitable condition for this. Kacin: Confront past, join EU "Europe has no other solution, but to offer to all states of the Western Balkans full EU membership, mutual trust and what is the essence of EU, free flow of people, goods, capital, services, so that instead of wars and crimes they may think about mutual development, regional and economic cooperation and investments," he said today. Kacin, who was speaking in Belgrade at the third regional meeting dedicated to obstacles in gathering facts relating to war crimes in the territory of the former Yugoslavia, said "there is one more important message for all states of the Western Balkans - the road to the EU is open once a realistic assessment of the present situation is established, and once each state and its political elite are confronted with their past." Kacin added that accountability for what happened in the wars in the former SFRY "could not be collective."
